Thewinterof2023wasunlikeanyother.Itwascolder,harsher,andmoreunforgivingthananyonecouldremember.Thesnowwasdeeper,thewindsstronger,andthenightslonger.Itwasawinterofextremes,wherethestrongsurvivedandtheweakperished.Butitwasalsoawinterofhope,ofrenewal,oflove.Sophiehadalwayslovedthewinter.Shelovedthecrispair,thebrightsnow,andthefeelingofwarmththatcamefrombeingwrappedupinathickcoatandhat.Butthiswinterwasdifferent.Thiswinter,everythingseemedharder.Thesnowwasdeeperthanshehadeverseen,andthewindseemedtohowlendlessly.Andyet,despiteitall,shefeltstrangelyalive.ItwasonacoldJanuaryeveningthatSophiemetAlex.Theywerebothwaitingforthebus,huddledunderthesamebusshelter.Atfirst,theydidn'tspeak.Theyjuststoodthere,shiveringinthecold.ButthenAlexofferedherhisscarf,andtheystartedtotalk.Itwasasimpleconversation,butitfeltlikethebeginningofsomethingspecial.
